We asked our Mums and Dads what Kiwiana things they remembered...

Making Pavlova

On Friday we made a pavlova as part of our Kiwiana topic. We all had a turn to mix or add things. The white pavlova got bigger and browner as it cooked.

When it was cooled, we added whipped cream and kiwifruit. Zeph said, having the kiwifruit made it doubly Kiwiana!
Then we ate it. We thought it was absolutely delicious!
Grace told us that the pavlova was invented as a tribute to the Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova who came to New Zealand in 1926.  Do you think a pavlova looks like a ballerina's tutu?

We made these "KIWIANA" plates!

Stories about the Emperor Penguin at Pekapeka Beach, Wellington

The emperor penguin came to New Zealand on Tuesday.  He swam to Wellington. He'd better get used to sand and grass.  They'd better let him swim back.
By Loyd
I think the emperor penguin got lost. He came swimming.  It hs big.  It came on Tuesday.  It came to New Zealand. It might have been chasing a fish, a fast one.  The penguin is black and white.  It might miss its family.  It has to get used to the hot.  And it came without anyone.  I felt sad for it.
By Sid
This penguin came to New Zealand.  We don't know why he came here.  Maybe he wanted to try some new fish.  His family is sad.  He is sad.  It came on Tuesday.
By Brendon
The penguin was chasing a normal fish and the penguin got lost.  Now he is in New Zealand.
Then the penguin looked where he was, in New Zealand!  Then he felt sad.
By Brooklyn
This penguin came to NZ on Tuesday because he wanted a holiday.  The sun is hot for him.  He swam 3000 km.  He came to a NZ beach.  I felt sad for it.
He went shopping.  He got some penguin toys for his penguin friends.
By Cody
This penguin swam all the way to New Zealand.  It came on Tuesday. I think it was chasing a fish.  It is feeling lonely.
By Scott

Our Pataka Designs

It is a Courtyard Pataka.  We have our own honey hive. You go up the steps to get to the food.  It has weapons in case baddies come.  It has low walls to keep animals out.  It has seats for people to sit in.
Brendon and Fred

It has steps and a gate. There is a door for food we want and a place to put mouldy food we don't want so birds can eat it. At the bottom there is an animal trap!
Scott and Brooklyn

It has storage at the back.  It has giant doors at the front to keep animals out.  Air can get in so the food doesn't go mouldy.
Loyd, Sid and Zeph
It is very high. It has really thick walls at the back. Food is  kept in a hole inside.  There are steps so people can get away from animals if they are chasing them.  People can sit at the top and have a nice view.
Chevy and Greta (and Sparkle)

There are people on the lookout.  Some people are in carts to go and get the food.  There are steps. The food inside is covered by a door. Kayla,Ella and Grace
Our pataka was very high to keep animals out. It had a floor and walls.  But it got hit by a tornedo so we didn't get to take a photo!
